2. Keep Hot Food Out

You also shouldn't put hot food inside of your refrigerator; you should wait for it to cool down before you put it inside of your refrigerator. When you put hot food inside of your fridge, your fridge has to exert extra energy to cool it off. Additionally, if the food is inside of a deep dish, it may not cool off quickly enough inside of a sealed container to keep the food safe.

3. Use An External Thermometer

Most refrigerators have a dial that allows you to twist to adjust the temperature in your fridge. However, most of these dials just use icons to indicate which way is "more cold" and "less cold." These dials do not allow you to see what the actual temperature is of the refrigerator.

The ideal temperature for your refrigerator is between 32 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Use a thermometer to determine the actual temperature inside of your refrigerator. If it is above or below the ideal temperature, adjust the dials, wait 24 hours, and check the temperature on the thermometer. Repeat this process until the temperature falls within the ideal range. This will keep your food safe and your energy consumption down.

4. Defrost Your Refrigerator

You should not allow frost to accumulate and build-up inside of your refrigerator. If it does build-up, you need to defrost your fridge. Excessive frost can cause your fridge's motor to run continuously.

5. Clean The Coils

Finally, you need to clean the condenser coils on the back of your fridge every couple of months. On older refrigerators, the coils are located on the back of the refrigerator. On many newer refrigerators, the coils are located at the bottom of the refrigerator. When the coils are clean, your fridge will consume less energy.
